Broom’s Bloom Dairy barn burns, injures state trooper, kills 10 cows

If there’s any good news to come out of the fire at Broom’s Bloom Dairy barn this morning, it’s that the off-duty state trooper who stopped to help wasn’t more seriously injured and that the ice cream store wasn’t damaged. According to an account posted a few hours ago on The Baltimore Sun’s website, exhaust from a piece of equipment ignited hay and spread through the barn at about 10:30 a.m. Cpl. James Joseph Kozlewski III, an off-duty state trooper, was driving by and stopped to help. The story said he was knocked unconscious and injured his leg and shoulder.

He was airlifted to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Ten cows were killed and the damage to the barn is estimated at $700,000, the story said. The ice cream and dairy store on the property wasn’t damaged.
