I know it took me a rather long time, but today I discovered Bel Air’s trove of Vera Bradley bags. See, it’s getting to be summer now and that means it’s time for the Bel Air mom uniform of Crocs, capris, a Mossimo t-shirt from Target and a floral print quilted Vera Bradley bag. The Vera Bradley company ensures that no two retailers in too close proximity sell its bags, so you have to know which boutique has the goods. I’d seen some of the luggage, and desk accessories at Pink Silhouette (20 East Lee St.) just off Main Street, so I knew a VB handbag retailer had to be close by. The folks at Pink Silhouette told me A Country Setting carries them. So, I confidently and misguidedly strode across Main Street to the Bel Air Country Store (100 Main St.) where they had a vast collection of tin stars, electric candles, gingham lampshades and scented candles, but no Vera Bradley bags. You see, A Country Setting is actually in a country setting. It’s three blocks north of Lee Street off Main Street at 20 Ellendale Street, right where that farmer’s fruit and vegetable stand opens up on the corner each summer. Just a ways down that road sits a little metal building off a gravel lot. In there, past the calico wing chairs, wrought iron plate stands and painted platters looms a bookshelf bursting with Vera Bradley’s pastel prints. They have handbags and clutches, wallets and cell phone covers. They have hats and skirts and stationery. They have eyeglass cases and belts and makeup cases and lunch bags. And they have this beach bag, it’s a straw tote with the Vera Bradley patterned fabric on the bottom and the half-way point accented with a black ribbon dotted with tiny sea shells. My 4-year-old fell in love with the Pink Elephants design. According to the Vera Bradley website, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of items in this pattern and the Hope Toile pattern go to support the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. So see, it’s for a good cause.

The Vera Bradley website also lists Green Spring Gift House at 1608 Jarrettsville Road in Jarrettsville as a VB retailer.
