Bel Air’s Free Outdoor Movie Nights start Friday with Surf’s Up

Bel Air Downtown Alliance starts its annual free Outdoor Movie Nights series this Friday, showing Surf’s Up on a screen at Shamrock Park. The evening starts at 7 p.m. with pre-movie entertainment by the Maryland Conservatory of Music Rock Band and food by Chick-Fil-A, Smoothie King and popcorn from the Alliance. The movie starts at dusk. My husband and I took the kids to last year’s first movie night of the season. A sudden thunderstorm struck shortly after the movie started. It was one of those noisy ones with cracks of lightning and ground-shaking thunder that made all the little kids scream as their parents clumsily steered strollers through the downpour. I posted about it last year. (Click here if you’re curious.) Up until the storm, it was a fun night. But if you’re little ones go to bed before 9 p.m., the movie probably starts too late for them. It’s still fun to go early for the performances they have on stage and the kids can enjoy the refurbished Shamrock Park playground. If you are staying for the movie, don’t forget a blanket or lawn chair. A little picnic makes it nice, too. Then just hope it doesn’t rain. (But if it does, the movie night will be held the next day.)

Here’s the movie lineup for the season:

    June 13: Surf’s Up
    June 27: Shrek the Third
    July 11: Spiderwick Chronicles
    July 25: Elf
    August 1: Bee Movie
    August 15: Daddy Day Camp
