Sad news to report. The Dagger Press is reporting that Stephen Wright, who was running for Harford County Executive in this fall’s election, was killed in a single car accident on Wheel Road in Bel Air just before 7 p.m. Thursday. Wright, 50, a Harford Republican Central Committee Member and co-founder of the Rt. 40 Republican Club, planned to challenge incumbent Harford County Executive David Craig and former county council president Robert Wagner in the September GOP primary. According to information released by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Wright was traveling southbound in the 500 block of Wheel Road when the 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee he was driving struck a utility pole off the right shoulder of the road. The Dagger reported that the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit determined Wright’s vehicle was traveling at “a normal rate of speed,” when it struck the pole. Wright was the only occupant in the car. Wright posted on his Facebook page that he was heading to a Harford County Right to Life Meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m., at the Abingdon Public Library, which is located a short distance from the crash site.

Our thoughts go out to his family.

Update 5/21 8:20 p.m.:

It appears that Stephen Wright may have had a medical problem moments before the accident.

Harford County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Specialist Monica Worrell told BANV:
“Witnesses on the scene at the time of the accident advised that the driver appeared to be having possible medical issues when they made contact with him. “

And the Baltimore Sun’s story today reported Wright’s car “slowed markedly, drifted off the right shoulder in a southbound lane of Wheel Road, and came to rest against a telephone pole…” Wright suffered from diabetes and the Sun story suggested Wright might have suffered a heart attack, though the official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Services for Wright are scheduled at McComas Funeral Home, 1317 Cokesbury Road Abingdon. A visitation is scheduled there for 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm & 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Tuesday, May 25. The funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 26 at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 141 Hickory Avenue, Bel Air. Click here for more information.
