Downtown Bel Air shooting leaves one man dead, one teenage girl injured early Sunday

Update 7/19: I just noticed The Baltimore Sun is reporting some additional information about the criminal record of the victim of Sunday’s fatal shooting in Bel Air. According to The Sun:

“According to court records, [Derrick] Maxey [Jr.] was charged with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and related charges in January 2008 in Baltimore, but prosecutors dropped the case. Also that same month, he was charged in Baltimore with illegal handgun possession and, three months later, received an 18-month suspended sentence, court records show.”

I didn’t believe it when my BANV Facebook friend told me he saw body bags and bullet shells on Bond Street this morning, but he was right. The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Derrick Maxey Jr., 25, of Aberdeen was fatally shot and a 15-year-old Harford County girl was shot in her leg around 2 a.m. today in a rear parking lot at 115 N. Bond Street, which is the address of the American Legion. A Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter transported the girl from Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. The Sun reported her condition this morning was not available.

According to The Sun:

“Bel Air Chief Leo F. Matrangola said detectives do not know if the man and the girl were targeted, and they didn’t appear to know each other. Police believe they were part of a group of people in the parking lot, he said.

“I think it’s going to be a long investigation,” Matrangola said. “We’re searching for leads and talking with acquaintances of the victim and other witnesses who may have been at the scene.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Det. Bradley Helm at 410-638-4500 or Corp. Ruszala at 410-836-5429.
