Monday night is the night the group that has been devising the Harford County Public Schools elementary redistricting plan presents its latest plan — along with the input its received from parents throughout the process — to the Board of Education. Chief of Administration Joseph Licata is scheduled to present the plan put together by the Superintendent’s Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) at 7:10 p.m at the meeting in the Bel Air High School Auditorium, 100 Heighe St., Bel Air. While all the public hearings held on the redistricting have attracted a good number of parents who expressed their concerns and often presented alternate plans of their own, no public comments will be accepted at this meeting, which is considered a board work session. The school board isn’t scheduled to make a final decision on the redistricting plan until its Feb. 28 meeting. The redistricting plan was put in place to balance enrollments districtwide and to fill the new Red Pump Elementary School, scheduled to open this August. Before that final meeting, there will be one more public hearing 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 at the A.A. Roberty Building in Bel Air.
Since the first draft of the redistricting plan was revealed this past November, groups of parents throughout the county have worked to convince school officials to alter parts of the plan. Several groups have been successful, while others were not. The alternate plans presented to the district have been listed on the district’s website along with STAC’s rationale for accepting or rejecting them. Click here to see those plans: http://www.hcps.org/publicinformation/redistricting/SUBMITTED_PROPOSAL_REVIEW_MATRIX.pdf. According to this matrix, it appears STAC plans to leave the decision on whether to grandfather 4th and 5th graders and allow them to remain at their current schools up to the Board of Education.

A note on the matrix indicates this is something the board would decide at its Feb. 28 meeting.
The district is still accepting comments on its plan that can be emailed to email@example.com.
