Harford Community College Announces Klein’s ShopRite Employee Scholarship

Bel Air, Md., March 13, 2011  — Harford Community College announces the establishment of the Klein’s ShopRite Employee Scholarship, the fourth scholarship program begun by the Klein Family at Harford Community College.
The new scholarship, established with a $20,000 donation by the Ralph and Shirley Klein Foundation, is available to company associates starting with the current academic year.
The scholarship provides for up to $500 toward tuition, fees or books per student, each semester. Tuition at Harford Community College is $82 per credit hour, the lowest college tuition in Maryland.
Employees of Klein’s ShopRite are eligible for the scholarship if they enroll in at least one for-credit course; hold a cumulative 3.0+ grade point average and live in Maryland. In addition, associates must work at least 12 hours per week at Klein’s ShopRite.
The Klein Family has been supporting scholarships at Harford Community College since 1996. In addition to the one just established, the Klein Family funds a degree-seeking scholarship for a student who is studying full time; a nursing scholarship in conjunction with Upper Chesapeake Health System; and a pharmacy scholarship.
“Harford Community College students are fortunate to have such solid supporters as the Klein Family,” said Dr. Dennis Golladay, president. “For many of our students, scholarships are the deciding factor in reaching their educational goals. Thanks to the steadfast support of the Klein Family, many students at Harford Community College will be able to continue with their education during these challenging economic times.”
Howard Klein, a longtime member of the board of the Harford Community College Foundation and vice president and general counsel at Klein’s ShopRite, said, “I have seen firsthand how Harford Community College impacts the lives of its students. Harford Community College is a precious resource in our community and being able to help our employees continue their education, one class at a time, helps us help our community.”
Christian P. Klapproth, III, a Klein’s ShopRite employee who is currently the recipient of one of the new scholarships, said, “Receiving one of the Klein’s ShopRite Employee Scholarships to Harford Community College has allowed me to get the education I need to make a career change. In today’s economy the only thing that is constant is change, and you must be able to adapt to our evolving society.”
“ The partnership between the Klein Family and Harford Community College has provided people like me, who want to make a change, the resources to achieve their personal goals which ultimately makes for a better employee,” Mr. Klapproth added.
