Harford County Public Library facilities go smoke-free as of Sunday, May 1

The Harford County Public Library today announced that as of Sunday, May 1, all county libraries — and the areas immediately surrounding them — will be smoke free. This means no smoking anywhere in the libraries, in the entryways or on the sidewalks and grounds outside the library buildings. According to the press release issued about the smoke-free policy, no one showed up to comment at an April 21 public hearing on the new policy. The Harford County Public Library joins Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and Harford Community College in adopting smoke-free policies. Here’s the full release:

HARFORD COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES
SMOKE-FREE POLICY FOR ALL BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS

(Belcamp, Maryland – April 28, 2011)   In the interest of the health and safety of customers and employees, Harford County Public Library has adopted a smoke-free policy for all buildings and grounds, effective May 1, 2011. The use of any type of tobacco product is prohibited, including the carrying or smoking of any kind of lighted pipe, cigar, cigarettes or other lighted smoking equipment.

No person may smoke in a library facility, entryway to any library facility, on the sidewalks or grounds around any library facility, or in any library vehicle.

“This smoke-free policy is a direct response to customer feedback from over the years and will create a more welcoming environment for all our customers,” stated Mary Hastler, Library Director.

Harford County Public Library joins the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and Harford Community College as the latest county organization to adopt the policy of an entirely smoke-free campus. No members of the public were in attendance at a public hearing on April 21 to allow for comment on the smoke-free policy at the library.
