July 4th Safety
The July 4th holiday is upon us once again! For most of us, the holiday is a time of family celebration and fun things to do. Family cookouts, parades, public fireworks displays etc… are all in full swing starting this weekend. In addition to these traditional activities many people celebrate with fireworks at home. As a reminder, most fireworks are illegal in Maryland. Generally speaking, only gold label sparklers and ground-based sparkling devices are allowed in Maryland. However, in Harford County, use of the ground-based sparkling devices are prohibited.
Below are some 4th of July fire safety tips to help make your holiday a safe one. Some of these may seem obvious, but every year failure to follow these basic suggestions leads to unfortunate accidents around the state. The State Fire Marshall, William Barnard, stated in an article in the Baltimore Sun this morning that misuse of fireworks in Maryland last year caused $1.5 million in property damage and, across the country, about 9,000 injuries. Many of these injuries involved permanent loss of eyesight. Therefore, please leave the fireworks displays to the experts this year.
4th of July Fire Safety Tips:
- Keep any fireworks away from your home, vehicles, trees/shrubbery, dry grass or any property that could be susceptible to fire damage
- If you or your children are using sparklers, keep them away from other people – sparklers can burn at up to 1200 degrees which can cause significant injuries
- Have a bucket/hose and/or a fire extinguisher nearby when using any type of fireworks
- Do not wear loose clothing while using any type of fireworks
- Before using a grill, check the connection between the propane tank and the fuel line. Make sure the venturi tubes – where the air and gas mix – are not blocked
- Keep all matches and lighters away from children. Teach your children to report any loose matches or lighters to an adult immediately. Supervise children around outdoor grills
- Never grill/barbecue in enclosed areas – carbon monoxide could be produced
- If using a charcoal, dispose of hot coals properly – douse them with plenty of water, and stir them to ensure that fire is out. Never place them plastic, paper or wooden containers
Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
