The Fallston Diner closed suddenly last Monday due to financial struggles, according to owner Gina Hatzimarkos.

“With the economy, you’re playing catch up and then you get behind,” Hatzimarkos said.

She and her husband, owner and chef Juan Munoz are now operating Papadukies Place at 11244 Pulaski Highway in White Marsh. Hatzimarkos declined to discuss the reasons the closing of the Fallston Diner was so sudden, but she said if she had known about it sooner, she would have liked to leave a note for her customers. The restaurant at 2314 Bel Air Road, which was a Denny’s before Hatzimarkos and Munoz opened it as the Fallston Diner in 2008, was boarded up by its landlord, Hatzimarkos said. (Bel Air News & Views is awaiting a call back from the landlord to see what might be done with the property.) Update 12:45 p.m.: Landlord Patrick Hess, owner of Operation Management, Inc., said some businesses expressed interest in the Fallston Diner property during this past weekend, but he wouldn’t divulge who. He also declined to discuss the reasons behind the restaurant’s sudden closing. He did say that he had the restaurant boarded up on Wednesday to protect its windows.) The Fallston Diner’s 20 employees lost their jobs when it closed. Hatzimarkos said she would like to give some them jobs at Papadukies Place if business picks up. The new restaurant has only three employees. She said Papadukies Place looks like a little house and is decorated with an old movie star theme featuring images of Marilyn Monroe and the Three Stooges. It’s now open daily 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and she said it might extend its hours.
