LEADERSHIP MARYLAND
SELECTS JOHN B. SCHAB
FOR ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY CLASS – THE CLASS OF 2012
ANNAPOLIS, MD – John B. Schab, director of Aberdeen Operations for Georgia Tech Research Institute, and a resident of Bel Air, has been selected for the Leadership Maryland Class of 2012, its 20th Anniversary Class. Founded in 1992, Leadership Maryland is an independent, educational, non-profit organization designed to inform top-level executives, from the public and private sectors, about the critical issues, challenges and opportunities facing the state of Maryland and its regions. Schab is one of 52 accomplished and talented statewide leaders selected to participate in the eight-month program.
Following a two-day opening retreat in April, participants will attend five two-day, and one one-day intense sessions focusing on issues, such as, economic development, education, health and human services, criminal and juvenile justice, environment, and multi-culturalism/diversity. More than 100 experts representing business, government, education, and the non-profit community will serve as panelists and guest speakers.
“The participants represent a broad spectrum of highly qualified executives from an extraordinary group of statewide applicants,” according to Nancy Minieri, founding president and CEO of Leadership Maryland. “After participating in a comprehensive range of experiences during this milestone anniversary year, these leaders will serve as important participants in the unified effort to shape Maryland’s future.” Leadership Maryland is one of 34 state leadership programs nationwide and has graduated over 900 statewide leaders.
Schab is an Ivy League graduate with master degrees in engineering, finance, and management. He is a leader within the Aberdeen Proving Ground community and participates in many professional organizations including the Army Alliance and the Northeastern Technology Council. He also serves on the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Transportation & Mobility Committee and the Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna’s Board Management Committee. His passion to improve the quality of life in the community has focused on STEM education, government-industry-academia partnerships that foster technology transfer and faster innovation, transportation infrastructure, and job creation.
“It is an honor to be selected into this program and recognized as a leader in our community,” stated Schab. “The challenges are complex ranging from a crumbling transportation infrastructure to a state business tax climate ranked 42nd to a national educational system producing students ranked 23rd in math and 31st in science when compared with 65 other top industrial countries. We can do better, and I look forward to continuing to work with other leaders around the state in tackling these issues.”
Schab has been very successful implementing ideas and programs into the community that are proving to be extremely valuable. Marlene Lieb, Associate Vice President for Continuing Education and Training at Harford Community College remarked, “How fortunate for us that a young professional with so much talent has consciously decided to work on making Maryland a better place for all of us to live and work.”
