Harford County Government to Display War of 1812 Commemorative Flag

Executive Order Issued by County Executive

(Bel Air, MD) – – In recognition of the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, Harford County Executive David R. Craig has issued Executive Order 13-3 announcing “Display of War of 1812 Commemorative Flag.” The Order issued by the County Executive directs the display of the official War of 1812 flag to begin Thursday, February 21, 2013 and continue through December 24, 2014, to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Ghent.

“As part of our state, and specifically the Chesapeake Region, commemoration of the War of 1812, Harford County will proudly display the 15 star and 15 stripe War of 1812 Flag at various locations in the county through December of 2014,” County Executive Craig said. “The city of Havre de Grace was directly engaged in the war and was attacked by the British on May 3, 1813 resulting in much of the town being destroyed,” Craig remarked.

The 15 star and 15 stripe American Flag was the contemporary and official flag of the nation during the War of 1812, as well as the “Star Spangled Banner Flag” that flew over Fort McHenry during the defense of Baltimore from British attack. The U.S. Federal Flag Code as found in the U.S. Code Annotated, Title 36 permits the 15 star and 15 stripe War of 1812 flag to be flown.

“Due to Harford County’s long involvement in the War of 1812, the loss of lives and property, I believe it is only fitting that this year, 2013, should be celebrated as the Bicentennial year to recognize this significant chapter in the history of our county, state and nation,” County Executive Craig said.

Pursuant to Executive Order 13-3 issued by County Executive Craig, the commemorative War of 1812 Flag will be flown at the Harford County Government Administration Building in Bel Air, the Harford County Council Office Building in Bel Air, the Harford County Courthouse, the McFaul Activity Center in Bel Air and the Havre de Grace Activity Center in Havre de Grace.
