SARC Hosts 5th Annual Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® Event

On April 20th, 2013, SARC will be hosting its 5th Annual Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® Event at MaGerk’s Pub in Bel Air. On site registration starts at 10am and the walk begins at 11am. County Council President, Billy Boniface, will again serve as the courageous Honorary Chair.  This walk is an international movement to engage men and boys in the fight to end gender and sexual violence against women. Participants walk in women’s high heels to symbolically “step up” and support survivors of abuse and commit to help end violence in their community. This event gives everyone the opportunity to be true agents of change and to create a society free from abuse and fear while raising critical funds to keep SARC services free of charge. Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® is especially poignant during the month of April as it is both Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Month.

This year’s theme is “Not your Typical Superhero.” Help be a true Superhero for Harford County and register to walk today by visiting The walker registration fee is $25 per walker and walkers who register before March 29th are guaranteed an event t-shirt. Male walkers will be provided with shoes while supplies last. From the website, you can pay the registration fee, start or join a team, set a goal, and begin raising money through posting videos, photos and through social media interaction! Our total fundraising goal this year is $50,000!

Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® was first organized by Frank Baird in 2001. According to Frank Baird, “This march gives men the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their courage and commitment to preventing sexualized violence.”  Gender and sexual violence does not just impact women, but it has a profound impact on their family, friends, and the men in their life who care about them.
