SARC’s Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes event to fight gender violence on April 20 at MaGerk’s Pub in Bel Air has supporters in Afghanistan who plan to tape their own vehicle pull competition as a demonstration of support that will be aired live during the local event. Here are the details:

Be a SUPERHERO Against Gender Violence and Put Yourself in Her Shoes™

Bel Air, MD, April 1, 2013SARC is excited to announce the formation of a team of Superheroes in every sense of the word!  ‘Team Afghanistan”- a team of deployed U.S. soldiers willing to stand up and rally with SARC in solidarity for ending gender and sexual violence in the military, in our homes, and all over the world has registered a team SARC’s Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® Event.

Jake Crawford, a former Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® participant from Bel Air and the captain of Team Afghanistan, is truly an inspiration. “Like all U. S. soldiers and civilians deployed overseas, I volunteered to serve my country. It is that spirit of service that motivates the men and women participating in our “Team Afghanistan” Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle pull competition. We hope to give a little more to those who need it most, and we’re excited about participating “Afghanistan style” in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® charity event”, says Jake.  Team Afghanistan will fundraise for SARC and pull a large MRAP vehicle around Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan while wearing Walk-a-Mile T-Shirts and Superhero capes to proudly demand an end to gender and sexual violence. The team will tape their experience and SARC will air in during our live Walk on April 20th.

We are asking you to support these troops and get involved with these Superheroes in one of two ways! Jake and his team invite active members of the military, esteemed veterans, and all who support them by joining Team Afghanistan and “Walking the Walk” with other participants on April 20th.  Or, if you are unable to attend the event, donate to their team via SARC’s Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® website.  To register or donate, please go to: http://sarcinhershoes.kintera.org/. Imagine the feeling of solidarity knowing you are standing tall (with heels on) in support of fellow soldiers defending America, women, and our right to personal safety. This gesture of activism is a shining example of the worldwide commonality among activists to inspire true and recognizable global change.

Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes® is an international movement to engage men and boys in the fight to end gender and sexual violence against women. Participants form teams, raise money and walk in women’s high heels to symbolically “step up” and support victims and survivors of gender and sexual abuse. SARC, a local Harford County non-profit providing services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse and stalking is hosting the event on April 20th to raise critical funds to keep SARC services free of charge for victims. This year’s theme is “Not your typical Superhero.”
