NMTC Science Café on Dietary Nutrients in Cancer Prevention, June 11
The last free NMTC Science Café of the season is coming up 7 to 8:30 p.m. June 11, 2013 at the Abingdon Branch of the Harford County Public Library. The topic is Dietary Nutrients in Cancer Prevention. Dr. Petra “Peko” Tsuji, an Assistant Professor at Towson University who completed a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in cancer prevention and molecular carcinogenesis at the National Institutes of Health. is to present the program. Many dietary nutrients have been recognized as prevention strategies against human diseases, especially cancer and inflammation. The mechanisms for many so-called ‘natural remedies’ are difficult to decipher, which is why basic research continues to be so urgently needed. Our presenter will discuss several popular nutrients, including the red wine polyphenol Resveratrol, Sulforaphane from cruciferous vegetables, and the mineral Selenium, and their actions in health and disease. Children’s Center of North Harford registration for the 2013 Summer Adventures Program begins June 17
The Children’s Center of North Harford is excited to announce registration for the 2013 Summer Adventures Program. Summer Adventures, which is open to children ages 4 to 11, is set to begin Monday, June 17 and offers 10 theme-based weeks of fun and learning. Weekly themes are include The Rainforest, Prehistoric Times and Down on the Farm as well as many others. The program runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Before and After Care are optional and run from 6:30 am to 9:00 am and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Summer Adventures Program will be held in our newly renovated School Age Classroom. Each week includes a theme-related field trip and guest speakers. During Weird Science Week, participants will be delighted by a visit from Miss Margie Lynch, better known as the Bubble Lady, as she amazes us with the science of bubbles. A visit from Mr. Richard Anderson of the Snyder Animal Foundation during The Great Outdoors Week will bring the children face to face with the animals of Maryland including a skunk and some wide-eyed owls. Participants will visit the time when dinosaurs roamed the earth by making paper mache dinosaurs and acting as paleontologists as they dig through rock to find dinosaur bones. A visit from Scales and Tales will make learning fun. Pirate Week includes a field trip to Inner Harbor to be entertained by the Urban Pirates of Baltimore. This exciting field trip will include a one hour harbor tour on the pirate ship “Fearless” with the Urban Pirates as our hosts. Other field trips include swimming at the Conowingo Pool and a visit to the Fire Museum of Baltimore. Families can choose to enroll for one or more weeks of the Summer Adventure Program. Innovation Cafe offers STEM opportunities for elementary students this summer
Innovation Cafe presents Summer of Innovation, a program that allows children to explore the roles of engineer, chemist or technology designer in a fun and innovative environment. The program includes hands on labs in physics, chemistry, biology, math and chemical/mechanical/civil and electrical engineering. The program is offered for students in grades 1 through 8. Registration deadline is June 22. Lab sessions are 1 hour per week and the program runs eight weeks through the months of July and August. Fees are $30 per session and $200 for all eight sessions.
