Children’s author Kwame Alexander to appear at the Aberdeen Library June 15

Children’s author Kwame Alexander to appear at the Aberdeen Library June 15. Here are the details:

(Belcamp, Maryland – June 11, 2013)  Kwame Alexander, author of 15 children’s books will be appearing at the Aberdeen Library on Saturday, June 15th at 2pm. His children’s picture book, Acoustic Rooster, a rhyming, rhythmic story about a group of jazzy animals who drive the barnyard wild, has been optioned for a national TV show. His debut Young Adult novel, He Said/She Said generated excitement at the recent Book Expo America convention, and his 2014 Young Adult novel, The Crossover, is winning rave reviews from American literary stars.

But Alexander’s new heights are worth noting not because of what they mean for his career, but what they mean for America’s youths. A big part of Alexander’s literary journey has been about empowering young people to take control of their lives. Literacy and literature are the vehicles he offers by challenging conventional wisdom and inspiring hope. Since 2006, his Book-in-a-Day workshops have produced 3,000 student-authors of 55 books.

“I love my job!” says Alexander. “Knowing what I know about the power of words to excite children and change their lives, I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Publisher’s Weekly, among others, considers Alexander a pivotal figure in contemporary American literature and publishing. Nikki Giovanni calls him her “literary son,” and some of America’s best-loved writers, such as Maya Angelou, Walter Dean Myers, and Edwidge Danticat know his name and works.

Registration for Saturday’s event is recommended. Contact the Aberdeen Library for more information at 410 273-5608. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Funding for this program is provided with support from the Harford County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
