Local Volunteers to Travel to Kisii, Kenya to build with Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village Program
(Bel Air, MD) – From July 27 to August 8, 2013, the Kenya Krew – a team of nine volunteers from Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna – will travel to Kisii, Kenya, where they will construct a home for a family in need of decent, affordable housing.
This trip was organized through Habitat for Humanity International’s Global Village program, which gives volunteers the hands-on opportunity to help build simple, decent housing in communities across the world. Global Village teams experience another culture as they build houses and hope.
Hosted by Habitat Kenya, the Kenya Krew will travel to Nyakunguru Village, located outside the city of Kisii. While there, they will work to construct a three-bedroom brick house for a local farmer, his wife and their seven children. Once their home is complete, this family will join the more than 2,000 low income families in Kenya that now have decent and durable shelter through the organization’s housing micro finance program.
The team, led by Abrielle Willis, Volunteer Coordinator at Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna, is made up of Eddie Jenkins, of Baltimore; Lizz Bondarenko, of Perry Hall; Carol Deel, of Bel Air; JD Snyder, of Belcamp; Tom and Jackie Shaffstall, of Elkton; and Bob and Gretchen Hyneckeal, of Boyertown, Pa.
This is Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna’s second international trip in two years. Last year, the affiliate partnered with Habitat Montgomery County on a week-long build trip to Gotera, El Salvador.
