St. Matthew Lutheran Church Christmas Festival of Lights opens Nov. 30

2013 SMLC Christmas Festival of Lights

St. Matthew Lutheran Church is hosting a “drive-thru” Christmas lights display in cooperation with local holiday lights aficionado Jim Kurtz starting Nov. 30 and continuing through Dec. 31 at the church property, 1200 Churchville Rd. in Bel Air. Here are the details:

St. Matthew Lutheran Church will be providing a free, “drive-thru” display of 20,000 festive Christmas lights synchronized to holiday music, including The Greatest Story Ever Told.  Associate Pastor Blaise Sedney began working in April with local Bel Air resident, Jim Kurtz, on plans to create a display of lights that are synchronized to holiday music which can be heard on your car radio as you drive past the display.  Lighting equipment purchases began in July and installation at the SMLC campus was a multi-week effort throughout October and November with support and participation by many St Matthew parishioners, friends, family and Bel Air businesses.  The total number of lights is just over 20,000 for a power consumption of about 2400 watts but uses only 20 amps because ALL of the lights are LEDs.  Connecting all those lights uses a total of about 1 mile of extension cords.  The display is located on the side of the SMLC campus facing away from Rt 22.  Drivers should use the main entrance on Churchville Road at the intersection of Brierhill Drive across from the Walgreens pharmacy.  As you drive through, St Matthews will be accepting donations to their Food Pantry.  Weather permitting, the display will run every night starting at 6:00 PM, except for a few nights when the display times will be adjusted to accommodate other church functions.
