“On Your Mark, Get Set…Read” is the theme of Harford County Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge for children and incorporates physical fitness with reading. The program runs from June 20-August 20 and is geared for children from birth to high school to encourage continued learning that inspires a lifetime love of reading. Studies show that children who participate in public library summer reading programs score higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the new school year, experience less summer reading loss and begin the school year with more confidence. MD State BBQ Bash, Aug. 12 & 13
The MD State BBQ Bash comes to downtown Bel Air Aug. 12 & 13. The barbecue themed street festival features the MD State BBQ Championship, with more than 50 competition teams from the Mid-Atlantic area and beyond competing for $12,500 in cash prizes and the chance to compete in the annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, TN and The American Royal in Kansas City, MO. In addition, more 40 amateur teams will compete in the MD State BBQ Bash Tailgate Challenge to see who has the best ribs while competing for cash, prizes, and bragging rights. The bash is free for the public and has regularly drawn over 30,000 attendees over two days. Hours are 3:30pm – 10:30pm Aug. 12 and 11:30am – 10:30pm Aug. 13.
