Things to do this weekend around Bel Air include the Fairy Tale Festival at the Bel Air Library on Friday, an open house at the historic Hays-Heighe House at Harford Community College also on Friday and a variety of events at the Anita C. Leight Estuary Center Saturday and Sunday.

Fairy Tale Festival at Bel Air Library, Jan. 12

Bel Air Library hosts its annual Fairy Tale Festival on Friday, January 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is held in honor of the creator of the fairy tale, Charles Perrault, on his 390th birthday. A highlight of the day will be celebrity story time readers under the pergola in the Children’s Department starting at 10:15 a.m. Readers include Harford County Executive Barry Glassman (10:15 a.m.); Harford County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Angela Rose (11:15 a.m.); Harford County Councilman Chad Shrodes (11:45 a.m.); Commanding General, CECOM, and APG Senior Mission Commander Major General Randy S. Taylor (12:15 p.m.); Harford County Council President Richard Slutzky (12:45 p.m.); Harford County Councilman Jim “Cap’n Jim” McMahon (1:15 p.m.); Bel Air Mayor Susan Burdette (2:15 p.m.); Bel Air Town Administrator Jesse Bane (3:15 p.m.); University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health President/CEO Lyle E. Sheldon (3:45 p.m.) and Harford County Councilman Mike Perrone (4:15 p.m.). Various fairy-tale themed activities for children and adults take place throughout the day, including Gingerbread Man boat building (1:30 p.m.), Goldilocks chair building challenge (2:30 p.m.), “Three Little Pigs” engineering (3:30 p.m.); and archery and making an archery craft (4:30 p.m.). Half-Off Fridays! at the Lutheran Mission Society Hickory Compassion Center, Jan. 12

Visit us at the Lutheran Mission Society Hickory Compassion Center for “Half-Off Fridays!” Our gently-used items (clothing, housewares, furnishings, etc.) are 50% off all day. (Some exclusions apply.) Everyone is welcome. The center is located at 2500 Conowingo Road, Hickory (Bel Air), MD 21015. Funds raised help support the LMS ministries. Hays-Heighe House open house, Jan. 12

The Hays-Heighe House is open 10 a.m. to noon Fridays, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday of most months. The Hays-Heighe House is at Harford Community College, 410 Thomas Road in Bel Air. For details call 443-412-2539.

Earth in a Glass Bowl event at Anita C. Leight Estuary Center, Jan. 13

The Anita C. Leight Estuary Center is hosting an Earth in a Glass Bowl event 10:30 a.m. to noon Jan. 13. “How is a terrarium like planet Earth? Let science and creativity collide while learning about our amazing planet and create a mini Earth terrarium for your office or home. All materials provided.” Cost is $18 per project. The Anita C. Leight Estuary Center is hosting a Rustic Winter Bird Feeders event 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 14. “Not all birds migrate – some tough out the winter here in Maryland! Make a log birdfeeder to take home to your backyard birds and help them survive the season of scarce resources.” Cost is $5 per project. The Anita C. Leight Estuary Center is hosting a Citizen Science: What’s it All About?” event 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 14. “Do you love science and want to know how you can make a difference? Volunteers all over the world are helping researchers find cures for diseases, help threatened and endangered species, improve water and air quality, and more! Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance at HCC, Jan. 31

January 31 (Wednesday), 7:30 PM, Harford Community College, Chesapeake Theater. A chamber music theatre work conceived and performed by The Core Ensemble for actor and trio (cello, piano and percussion). The work celebrates the lives of the great African-American poets Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Claude McKay, as seen through the eyes of the great muralist and painter Aaron Douglas. Text is by Akin Babatunde. The musical score includes works by jazz giants Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus as well as concert music by Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker.
