The Harford County Department of Planning and Zoning sent along the following details on the recipients of the Harford County Historic Preservation Commission’s Special Preservation Awards:

Historic Preservation Commission Announces 2012 Awardees

(Bel Air, MD – May 11, 2012) The Harford County Historic Preservation Commission has announced its 17th annual award recipients during a breakfast ceremony at the Liriodendron Mansion in Bel Air. Presented each May in honor of National Historic Preservation Month, the awards recognize individuals and organizations that have demonstrated their commitment to stewardship of the County‟s historic and cultural resources. Mr. James Chrismer, Chair of the Harford County Historic Preservation Commission, acted as master of ceremonies, and County Executive David R. Craig gave opening remarks congratulating the award winners and extolling the importance of historic preservation in Harford County.

Special Preservation Awards acknowledge groups or individuals whose programming, activities, publications, exhibits, demonstrations, or presentations advance historic preservation to the general public. There were two Special Preservation Awards this year; Havre de Grace Historic Preservation Commission and the City of Havre de Grace for the completion of The Lafayette Trail brochure and the Historical Society of Harford County, Town of Bel Air and Harford County for their work in honoring Maryland veterans through the Veterans‟ Day Celebration Committee.

Accepting on behalf of the Havre de Grace HPC and City of Havre de Grace were Commission members Ms. Grace Dennis, Ms. Ellen Eltgroth, Mr. Robert Greene, Ms. Kathy Keen and Ms. Judy Plitt. Accepting for the Veterans‟ Day Celebration Committee was Ms. Carol Deibel and Ms. Maryanna Skowronski, Director of the Harford County Historical Society, Chief of Police Leo Matrangola with the Town of Bel Air and Councilman „Capt‟ Jim McMahan with Harford County Government.

Preservation Project Awards recognize significant achievements in preserving, restoring, or finding a sensitive adaptive re-use for the County‟s built environment. This year the Commission recognized the Aberdeen Proving Ground Department of Public Works for their commitment to the preservation of historic buildings on the APG campus, specifically for their efforts to restore the Gunpowder Meetinghouse and Quiet Lodge. Director of the Department Public Works Thomas Kuchar, Garrison Commander Col. Orlando Ortiz and Mr. Mark Gallihue accepted the award.

The next award of the day, the Preservationist Honor Award, went to the Harford Land Trust. The Preservationist Honor Award is given to individuals, museums, organizations, or businesses whose work and vision over a prolonged period have sustained the richness of the County‟s heritage and promoted the cause of historic preservation in Harford County.

The 2012 award pays tribute to the Harford Land Trust on their 20th Anniversary and for their dedication to the preservation of landscapes and viewsheds in Harford County. Accepting the award for the Harford Land Trust was Executive Director Margaret Niland, President of the Board of Directors, Harry Webster, and Vice President of the Board, Dr. Dennis Kirkwood.

The final award of the day was given to Ms. Christine Presberry Tolbert for her devotion and dedicated stewardship of Hosanna School over 31 years; she was awarded the Preservation Stewardship Award for her tremendous efforts. Accepting the award on behalf of Ms. Tolbert was her cousin and fellow Hosanna School Museum Board Member Ms. Agnes Minor.

The Historic Preservation Commission, an eleven member board of appointed volunteers, works closely with the Department of Planning and Zoning to advocate for historic preservation of the County‟s cultural resources. Commissioners meets monthly and are responsible for recommending properties to the County Historic Landmarks list, assisting property owners on the physical and financial aspects of preservation, and cultivating community support for the preservation and promotion of the County‟s historical and cultural heritage.

The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency sent along details from today’s End of Chemical Agent Demilitarization Operations Ceremony:

U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency Celebrates End of Chemical Agent Demilitarization Operations

Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. – The U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency (CMA) today hosted a formal ceremony in recognition of the January 21, 2012, milestone—the successful completion of its chemical agent stockpile disposal mission. This major milestone was attributed to the many dedicated, committed professionals who demonstrated excellence in the safe handling and disposal of our Nation’s stockpile.

“We knew that our common goal—to destroy the stockpiles at Johnston Island, Maryland, Indiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Oregon and Utah—was challenging, but we forged ahead. Today, we are justifiably proud. We made the world safer,” said Don Barclay, Acting Director, CMA.
Today’s ceremony, attended by more than 300 guests, highlighted the achievements of CMA and its systems contractors in destroying nearly 90 percent of the United States’ declared chemical agent stockpile—more than 27,000 tons of chemical nerve and blister agents, contained in more than 2.3 million munitions and bulk containers.
Speakers at the ceremony included Barclay; Mr. Conrad Whyne, former CMA Director and current Program Executive Officer for the Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives; Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Claude M. Bolton, Jr., former Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology;  Ambassador Robert P. Mikulak, U.S. Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW); Ambassador Ahmet Űzűmcű, Director-General of the OPCW; Mr. Carmen Spencer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for the Elimination of Chemical Weapons; and Dr. A. Tom Hopkins, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Threat Reduction and Arms Control.
“CMA has shown the world that tough jobs can be accomplished safely,” said Mr. Spencer “CMA has achieved tens of millions of consecutive safe hours worked, and the numbers show that working in a CMA chemical demilitarization plant is as safe as working at a software publishing company. That’s a stellar accomplishment.”
With completion of its disposal mission, CMA HQ will focus on its remaining missions, including the assessment and destruction of recovered chemical warfare materiel; managing and closing the four remaining destruction facilities in Alabama, Arkansas, Utah and Oregon; safely storing the remaining chemical weapons stockpiles in Kentucky and Colorado; supporting the communities surrounding the Kentucky and Colorado stockpiles with emergency management planning and carrying out the Chemical Weapons Convention treaty mission as the Army’s Executive Agent.

The  1st annual Dave Simmons ALS Golf Tournament held last Saturday at the Wetlands Golf Course in Aberdeen raised nearly $12,000 for ALS research. Here are the details:

Golf Tournament Raises Nearly $12,000 for ALS Research

May 17, 2012– Rockville, MD. The 1st annual Dave Simmons ALS Golf Tournament was held at the Wetlands Golf Course on Saturday, May 12, 2012. The tournament raised nearly $12,000 for ALS Research through the ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter.

ALS is a progressive neuromuscular disease that occurs when motor nerve cells cease to function and die. In most cases a person’s mind remains sharp and alert; however, voluntary muscle control becomes completely lost, often resulting in total paralysis and the inability to speak. The average life expectancy for someone living with ALS is two to five years after diagnosis. There is currently no known cause, cure, or means of prevention.

The tournament was held in memory of Dave Simmons who lost his battle with ALS in October 2011 after 10 months. At the 1:30pm shotgun, 96 golfers were sent onto the course and they could not have asked for a more beautiful day. There were 30 door prizes, 6 silent auction items, and roughly 30 raffle prizes, along with 54 hole sponsors (quarter, half and whole). The event also included a “Legacy Table” to honor and remember those who have lost their fight with ALS. Pictures of loved ones were placed on the table, including Dave Simmons and Lois Elaine Fisher, the wife of committee member Dennis Fisher. Lois passed from ALS July 4, 2011. The committee consisted of 8 close friends and family who worked closely with Dave in the Harford County School System.

The funds that were raised during this tournament are earmarked to support ALS research to find a cause and cure for this horrible disease. At the national level, The ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to find effective treatments and a cure for ALS. Our global research effort has helped increase the number of scientists working on ALS, advanced new discoveries and treatments, and has shed light on the complex genetic and environmental factors involved in ALS.

The ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter provides free patient and family services to more than 515 people living with ALS (PALS) each year in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Direct services that the Chapter provides for PALS include counseling, medical equipment loans, clinic and home visits, support groups, grants for respite care and transportation purposes, education and informational services, and assistive technology. These services make us the primary source of support for PALS in the region.

The mission of The ALS Association – DC/MD/VA Chapter is to improve the quality of life for PALS in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia while raising public awareness and support for finding a cure. The Chapter is based in Rockville, MD with an office in Richmond, VA.

Gavigan’s Home Furnishings aims to open at former C-Mart site in Forest Hill by Labor Day http://www.belairnewsandviews.com/2012/05/gavigans-home-furnishings-aims-to-open-at-former-c-mart-site-in-forest-hill-by-labor-day.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=gavigans-home-furnishings-aims-to-open-at-former-c-mart-site-in-forest-hill-by-labor-day http://www.belairnewsandviews.com/2012/05/gavigans-home-furnishings-aims-to-open-at-former-c-mart-site-in-forest-hill-by-labor-day.html#comments Wed, 16 May 2012 18:39:36 +0000 stacey http://www.belairnewsandviews.com/?p=10079

Local furniture retailer Gavigan’s Home Furnishings is currently gutting and renovating the old C-Mart at 1503 Rock Spring Road in Forest Hill and hopes to have the 63,000 square foot store ready for a Labor Day grand opening, according to Gavigan’s Vice President Rob Gavigan.

He said the company is spending $1.5 million to renovate this location for its fourth Maryland store because he liked how well-known the spot is for having been the home of C-Mart since 1972.

“It’s a dedicated site and it’s a landmark,” said Gavigan. “If I say, ‘We’re in the old C-Mart building,’ people will know where we’re at.”

C-Mart closed intially in 2005 when the family that owned it sold the business to a group that moved it to Joppa. That business later closed and the family behind C-Mart used the Forest Hill building they still owned as a flea market, bargain outlet and auction site until last year, when they closed it for good and moved their auction business to Cockeysville.

Gavigan said his company bought the building because he felt Bel Air had the right kind of customers for the type of furniture Gavigan’s carries. He describes it as higher quality, affordable furniture that would compete with a store like Gardiners Furniture.

The renovation of the site includes removal of abestos floor tiles a new front facade.

“The whole thing is going to be gutted and modernized,” Gavigan said.
