Bel Air’s last Blockbuster store is closing March 13. Closing signs are posted all over the store at the Bel Air Town Center, 588 Baltimore Pike. The manager there told me they are offering customers a special deal if they sign up at the store to join the Blockbuster By Mail program. They’ll give you a month’s subscription free and they’ll give you four free previously viewed DVDs from their store, where a liquidation sale is under way, with new DVDs priced at $9.99. The next two nearest stores in Perry Hall and at the Joppa and Satyr Hill Road intersections are also closing. A final closing date hasn’t been set for them yet, an employee said, but they will stop renting movies as of March 27. After these closings, the nearest Blockbuster stores to Bel Air will be the Elkton store at 985 E Pulaski Highway #8 and the Towson store at 6317 York Road. A story in today’s Wall Street Journal reports that Blockbuster Inc. is getting ready to put itself up for sale following a disagreement among its creditors on giving it more cash to allow it to emerge from bankruptcy protection.
