|Sonora Smart Dodd|
Apparently, it all started back in 1909 when Sonora Smart Dodd, who had been raised by her father, was listening to a Mother’ Day sermon at her Spokane Washington church. To honor all that her father had done for her, Dodd organized the first Father’s Day celebration and held it in June, the month of her father’s birthday. The idea caught on and a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City in 1926. A Joint Resolution of Congress recognized the holiday in 1956 and in 1972, President Richard Nixon made it a national holiday to be held on the third Sunday of June.
