Things to do this weekend around Bel Air (June 3-5)


This is a big weekend for strawberry festivals. I’ve got five listed here. If  you know of more, let me know and I’ll add them. There’s lots of music this weekend, too. The Schools in Harmony benefit concert for Red Pump Elementary is tonight. Friday, you can catch Havre de Grace’s Concert in the Park or Chalk Dust performing at Bel Air’s First Friday event. The Maryland Conservatory of Music’s Faculty and Student concert takes place Friday in Havre de Grace and Saturday in Bel Air and the Crawdaddies perform Sunday at the Jerusalem Mill Village Summer Concert. Plumpton Park Zoo is celebrating its 25th birthday with a two-day party Saturday and Sunday.

Schools in Harmony benefit concert for the new Red Pump Elementary music program June 2

Concert to benefit the new Red Pump Elementary School is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 2 at Forest Lakes Elementary School, 100 Osborne Pkwy. Schools in Harmony is a Gold Award Project by the Girl Scouts to help the new school purchase instruments for its music program.

Zumbathon fundraiser June 3

Friends of Bel Air High School alumna Kim Fecik Carruth are hosting Zumbathon fundraiser for her on Friday, June 3 at Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace. Kim has Stage 4 breast cancer and money raised at the event goes to a trust fund to help pay her medical and living expenses for her and her 9-year-old. Cost for the event is $10 for adults and $5 for students and t-shirts will be available for $15. The event will be led by a certified Zumba instructor. Kicking off at 5:00 pm they all have musicians playing live music in the streets until 9 pm, dancing if you care to, stores and galleries open late, specials and discounts in our restaurants and stores, the Main Street Expo, food by the American Legion, a special interest car show, and fun and free activities for kids. And last but not least, our Arts by the Bay Gallery on Warren Street will be open displaying the creations of Harford County artists.

Plumpton Park Zoo’s 25th birthday party June 4 & 5

The Plumpton Park Zoo is celebrating its 25th birthday with a party Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5 at the zoo, 1416 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911. In addition to all of the zoo’s amazing animals, we’re bringing in food vendors and family friendly entertainment in order to make this weekend a special event for our guests! Our food vendors will be serving Kilby Cream Ice Cream, Maryland Crabcakes, Funnel Cake, Burgers, Hotdogs, and MORE!! Jerusalem Mill Village Summer Concert series featuring The Crawdaddies (Cajun/Zydeco) at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 5. Jarrettsville Lions Carnival June 6 through June 11

The annual Jarrettsville Lions Carnival will be held from June 6 through June 11, 2011, in the carnival field between Keene Dodge and Smith Hardware, across Norrisville Road from the Northern Precinct Sheriff Station and the Jarrettsville Branch Library, with grounds open from 6 – 10 pm each night. Every evening this year will be a Family Night — buy a wristband for one price and ride all night!  Individual tickets for rides also available. Come for rides, to enjoy funnel cakes and more, and take a chance on winning a John Deere CX Gator or Stihl Grass Trimmer (Lions raffle).

Harford County Restaurant Week June 9-15

Harford County’s 2nd annual Restaurant week is coming up June 9-15. More than 40 local restaurants are participating in the Office of Economic Development and Tourism event, offering Restaurant Week menus or other special deals. Participating full service restaurants will offer a three course prix fixe menu for $20.11. The week ends with a drawing for a basket of Harford County restaurant gift cards and certificates for each participating restaurant. Prize drawing entries will be given out by the participating restaurants to their qualifying patrons. Electric Violinist Mark Wood performs with students at Fallston High June 7

Electric Violinist Mark Wood, formerly from Trans Siberian Orchestra, will be returning to Youth’s Benefit Elementary School this year to share his talents and compose the “Electrify Your Strings Orchestra.” On June 6 and 7, 2011, he will work with the Youth’s Benefit Elementary and Fallston Middle string students to compose an orchestra rock concert that will be performed at Fallston High School on June 7, 2011. This is always an amazing concert, and Mr. Wood is a wonderful teacher, musician and role model to all students. Mr. Wood is an accomplished musician who has played with Billy Joel, Celine Dion, Lenny Kravitz and Paul McCartney, just to name a few. Recently, he has been featured on The Today Show, as well as many other local television and radio shows as he tours the United States and performs with young students.
