It’s been delayed a few times now, but the latest update from the Maryland Transportation Authority says the Route 24 and 924 overpass is now due to open at 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. Here’s the press release from the MDTA:

Construction Update

Fall 2011

Last Updated: October 3, 2011 10:52:11 AM
The new MD 24 bridge over MD 924 (Emmorton Road) and Tollgate Road is scheduled to open to traffic by morning rush hour Wednesay, Oct. 5. Once the new bridge is open, MD 24 motorists traveling between I-95 and Bel Air will travel the bridge and bypass the signalized intersection at MD 924.

In addition, new traffic patterns will be implemented on the ramps from northbound and southbound I-95 to MD 24 (Exits 77A and 77B).

Work will require overnight lane closures and traffic drags on MD 24, MD 924 and I-95 from approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 to 5 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5. During the traffic drags, police will bring vehicles to a reduced pace prior to the work zone. Please use extreme caution while traveling through the area.

Drivers should anticipate delays as motorists get used to the new traffic patterns on the ramps. Backups can be expected on northbound I-95, especially during evening rush hours, as crews work to complete widening of the northbound I-95 ramp to MD 24 (Exit 77A). Motorists are advised to pay attention to highway guide signs, traffic signals and pavement-marking arrows.

As the project continues, lane closures on MD 24 and MD 924 may be in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Lane closures on northbound and southbound I-95 at MD 24 (Exit 77) may be in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, Monday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday.

Please use extreme caution and watch for construction workers and equipment. Remember, for your safety, pedestrians are prohibited during construction. The restrictions are along MD 24 from just south of Singer Road to just south of MD 755. Along MD 924 and Tollgate the restrictions are at the MD 24 intersection. Once construction is complete, pedestrians will be able to cross at newly constructed crosswalks along MD 924/Tollgate Road.
